A magazine telling extraordinary stories from across the globe

Words by Swill Editors

Swill Magazine

First we brought you the rootin’ tootin’ hootenanny that is Shady Pines Saloon, then we gave you whisky rumpus room Baxter Inn, pizza den of iniquity Frankie’s, French heavy hitter Restaurant Hubert, Italian supper club Alberto’s Lounge and now… a magazine.

Edited by Myffy Rigby (former editor of the Age and SMH Good Food Guide and Chief Food and Drink editor of Time Out Australia), SWILL is a collection of stories, images and illustrations from the world of food.

A broad-reaching publication covering everything from the greatest dive bar on the planet to hot honey on American pizza, octogenarian restaurateurs, wild mountain apiarists, nightlife pioneers, niche collectors, bakers, movers, shakers and groove makers.

“Our stories will drop you in a dark bar in New Orleans at four in the afternoon, and after service in a Carlton restaurant at four in the morning,” says Rigby. “A beautiful reminder that there is an electrifying scene out there waiting to be discovered – high to low, near and far, written with a sense of fun and adventure.”

“No themes, no trends, no hype, no reviews. Just interesting stories about extraordinary people.”

Swill will be a collectable edition, equally at home on a coffee table or bookshelf, on the pass and covered in gravy stains or left on the back seat of the 425 bus. Built to be treasured, and written to be used.

Rigby will spearhead the publication, working with Swillhouse Big Boss Anton Forte and creative director Jordan McDonald. “Just like the venues, this thing’s going to be totally immersive, unique, and hopefully a whole lot of fun to get lost in, too,” says McDonald.
Swill will launch later this year, along with Hubert Talks – a series of events that bring the magazine to life. The publication will be available for purchase from swillhouse.com and in specialty stores around the country.

“Swill is my love of art, design, people and hospitality wrapped up in a beautiful magazine,” says Forte. “I’m a lover of print, old books, tattered magazines, and the joy of a new hardcover. There’s something so joyous about words on paper.”

“Swill tells weird, wonderful and esoteric stories. It will be smart, dirty, sad and cool. A product to love, a thing that I’ll cherish.”
